Vice President Kamala Harris, speaking publicly for the first time since the attempted assassination of former President Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, condemned the violence during a speech in Michigan on Wednesday.
“As we all know, this was a heinous, horrific, despicable act,” Harris said at a moderated campaign event in Kalamazoo. “Fortunately, he was not seriously injured.”
She said that when she and her husband, Doug, saw what was happening, they immediately wished him well and that their thoughts immediately turned to Trump’s wife, Melania.
“At the end of the day, just because you hold public office doesn’t mean you should have to fear for the safety of your loved ones,” Harris continued.

Harris also offered condolences to the family and friends of Corey Comperatore, who was shot and killed while trying to protect his family at the rally.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Corey Comperatore, a true hero who lost his life protecting his family. Doug and I, of course, send our heartfelt condolences to them. We also pray for a speedy recovery for those seriously injured that day. And we would like to thank the U.S. Secret Service, emergency responders and local authorities.”

Harris said the shooting raises questions about how they should interact with one another during election season..
“I believe the United States of America is the greatest democracy in the history of the world, but one of the questions we face now in the wake of this weekend’s shootings is how do we engage with one another in this campaign?” Harris said.
“On Sunday night, President Joe Biden called for unity. Our nation’s history has been marred by political violence, but we must unite in the belief that violence will never be tolerated. There can be no equivocation on that point.”
Harris’ speech came one day after Biden spoke at the 115th NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas. Following the assassination attempt on President Trump, he again called on Americans to “de-escalate” American politics, before repeatedly attacking the president in his own comments.
