Russian President Vladimir Putin recently expressed concern over the unregulated growth of Bitcoin mining activity in Russia. During a meeting with government officials, Putin warned that the increase could lead to widespread power outages in some parts of the country.

Bitcoin mining: an energy-intensive activity?

Bitcoin mining is an extremely energy-intensive activity, consuming an average of 16 billion kilowatt-hours per year in Russia, roughly 1.5% of the country’s total electricity consumption. This consumption continues to grow due to the relatively low cost of electricity in Russia and the easy availability of mining equipment.

Despite restrictive crypto laws, Russia is set to become the world’s second-largest crypto mining nation after the United States in 2023. But its rapid growth has raised concerns among regional authorities, particularly in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, which suffers from prolonged power outages due in large part to aging infrastructure.

Putin said that an uncontrollable increase in electricity consumption for Bitcoin mining could lead to power shortages in some regions, denying power to new businesses, residential areas and social facilities, and that this could delay promising investments and infrastructure projects.

Putin on the offensive!

To address the situation, President Putin ordered the implementation of fiscal and customs controls to rein in miners and called for the passage of strict federal legislation to address the issue.

Putin’s recent decision to regulate Bitcoin mining comes at a time when Russia has been forced to cut power in several regions due to problems at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant, highlighting the energy challenges facing the country and the importance of timely and systematic decisions. Regulating this activity.

Putin’s stance on Bitcoin mining reflects growing concerns about Russia’s energy security, but also signals a need to regulate the rapidly expanding industry to avoid major disruptions to the country’s power supply.
