Obama, top Democrats reportedly pushing Biden to drop out of 2024 race

Former President Barack Obama and other leading Democrats are pressuring President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, according to multiple reports.

The Washington Post The outlet reported Thursday that President Obama has only spoken to Biden once since his disastrous defeat in the presidential debate between the incumbent and former President Donald Trump. The outlet noted that “during the conversation,” President Obama made it clear that he was the only one who could influence Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

But President Obama has reportedly “had serious conversations about the future of the Biden campaign” with allies, and has discussed Biden’s political “agenda” with senior Democratic leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Sources with ties to Obama said he told Democratic leaders that Biden’s “path to victory has narrowed significantly” and that the 81-year-old president “needs to seriously consider the possibility of running himself.”

President Obama is reportedly concerned about Biden’s record and the legitimate threat that Republicans will take control of the White House and both houses of Congress next year. He is also reportedly worried that donors will drift away from Biden and the Democratic Party.

The Biden campaign is projected to raise just 25% of the big donors it had planned to raise money from in July, according to a person familiar with the projections. NBC News.

A spokesman for President Obama declined to comment to The Washington Post.

New reports Axios The paper cited a Washington Post report in its entirety, citing two sources who claim that Obama told allies that Biden “needs to consider the feasibility of running a campaign.”

Pelosi reportedly met privately with Biden to highlight the potential future consequences for Democrats in Congress if the Democratic presidential nominee does not abandon his reelection campaign. Pelosi reportedly showed Biden polling results showing that Biden cannot beat Trump in the 2024 election.

One of Biden’s “close friends” reportedly told Axios: “His choice is to become one of the heroes of history, or to make sure the Biden Presidential Library never happens. I pray he does the right thing. He’s heading in that direction.”

Several Democratic officials reportedly told Axios that Biden could face pressure to drop out of the presidential race “as soon as this weekend.”

Associated Press The Post also published a story Thursday repeating reports that Obama told allies that Biden needed to reconsider the feasibility of campaigning. The Post also spoke to anonymous sources who confirmed Pelosi’s meeting with Biden.

NBC News The paper reported Thursday, citing five people with knowledge of the situation, that Biden’s “ground has shifted.”

“The end is near,” a person close to Biden told the outlet.

Late Wednesday, ABC News The Post shared new details about a private meeting between Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Saturday. A “source” close to both Democrats told the outlet that Schumer had a “frank discussion” with the president and urged Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Schumer’s office said of the meeting, “I sat down with President Biden this afternoon in Delaware and we had a great conversation.”

In response to the ABC News report, a spokesperson for Schumer said, “Unless ABC’s source is Chuck Schumer or President Joe Biden, the report is pure speculation. Leader Schumer conveyed his caucus’ views directly to President Biden on Saturday.”

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., on Wednesday urged Biden to “pass the baton” and end his presidential campaign.

“Joe Biden was one of the most significant presidents in our nation’s history, and his lifetime of service as a senator, vice president and president has made our country better,” Schiff said. statement“But our country is at a crossroads. President Trump’s reelection undermines the very foundations of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat Donald Trump in November.”

Complicating things for President Biden, he was removed from campaign activities on Wednesday after testing positive for COVID-19.
