Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley praised Democrats for “putting a young candidate forward” for the 2024 presidential race on CNN’s “The Lead” on Thursday.
“We have to start with the news on Sunday that President Biden dropped out of the presidential race. You’ve always been skeptical that he could stay in office for another four years, so were you surprised?” host Jake Tapper said.
Haley said: “I was not surprised and I was not pleased. I called for IQ testing throughout the campaign. I didn’t do it to be disrespectful or to be spiteful. I did it because I don’t think it’s just about Joe Biden. We have a problem in Washington where people come into office and don’t want to leave, and their staff and their families keep them going. And that’s a problem for the American people.”
“You also say that if we nominate Donald Trump, I guarantee you that Kamala Harris will become president, and that the first party to retire an 80-year-old candidate will win the election. Do you still believe that?” Tapper asked.
She continued, “I think it was very smart of the Democrats to put up a young candidate. I think that’s what America wanted. But when I see them put up the weakest candidate they could, I think that was a mistake.”
Haley added: “The selection of Kamala Harris as a candidate is to be commended. The selection of one of the most liberal politicians as a candidate, who perhaps could have been a candidate, is going to be problematic.”
