‘The View’ Co-Host Alyssa Farah Griffin Reality Checks Sunny Hostin After She Calls Kamala Harris ‘A Moderate’

“The View” co-host Alyssa Farrah Griffin harshly criticized that reality after fellow co-host Sunny Hostin called Vice President Kamala Harris a “moderate” on Friday.

Harris was ranked second only to Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders as the most liberal senator in the 116th Congress by GovTrack, a nonpartisan organization that tracks lawmakers’ voting records. After Hostin called Harris a “moderate,” Griffin examined Harris’ policy record and platform during the 2020 presidential primary.

“Republicans are trying to paint her as a far-left winger,” Hostin began. “She’s a former prosecutor. Not just a former prosecutor, but the attorney general of the largest Justice Department in the country outside of the actual Justice Department. Prosecutors are not really left wing. They put people in jail for a living, you know? They’re pretty moderate. I know the vice president personally, and she’s not. She’s a moderate.”

“Can I answer that,” Griffin chimed in. “I think the point is that in 2020, she ran left the minute she ran left.”

Griffin pointed to Harris’ support for bail for Black Lives Matter rioters and argued that she is leaning more toward the center as she prepares to run in the general election. (Related: Environmental justice, diversity programs and more: Some of Kamala Harris’ biggest legislative accomplishments)

“As an example, when the country was being torn apart over the George Floyd incident, she made a statement about wanting to help the people protesting in the streets. People took that in a way and felt that she was running to gain sympathy in the primaries, unlike someone like Biden,” added Griffin, who received backlash from other hosts.

Harris has come under fire for imposing harsh sentences on nearly 2,000 people for marijuana-related offenses during her time as California’s attorney general, and as a senator she co-sponsored a bill to decriminalize marijuana use.

The current vice president also signed Sanders’ proposed “Medicare for All” bill, which would have eliminated private health insurance and created a single-payer system in which the federal government would be the sole provider of health insurance. She then proposed her own version of “Medicare for All” in July 2019, which would have allowed Americans to keep their own private insurance companies.

Harris was also a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal introduced in the House by New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and supported abolishing the Senate filibuster to pass the bill in 2019. As a Democratic senator at the time, she also supported a ban on fracking, but later backed down.

During her time as a presidential candidate in 2020, she supported slavery reparations for Black Americans.
