Detroit pastor reveals what Trump asked for during church visit — then explains why black voters are shifting allegiances

Speaking at the Republican National Convention this week, a Detroit pastor explained why black voters are increasingly leaning toward the Republican Party.

Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who heads Church 180, not only spoke at the Republican National Convention; host Former President Donald Trump visited his church last month. He told WXYZ-TV While he is not endorsing a candidate in the 2024 election, he shed light on why Republican support is growing among voters who have historically supported Democrats.

“That’s what our country needs. They need a relationship with Jesus Christ.”

“If you look at our community, you can clearly see that our community is hurting. Our community has thrived under Democratic leadership,” Sewell told WXYZ. “We’re hurting.”

With regards to black men specifically, Sewell said Trump has earned their support because he represents change and is a signal that help is on the way.

“Well, you know what? You see black men supporting President Donald Trump,” Sewell said. “I think a lot of them understand that something needs to change, I get that, and I believe black women will start supporting them too.” [Trump]”

But what about Vice President Kamala Harris?

Sewell said he didn’t accept the argument that Harris would win the black vote simply because she is black.

“There’s nothing more powerful in America than black women, so I understand the loyalty to black women,” Sewell said, “but sometimes it can be misguided. Some people called me this afternoon and said, ‘Vote for Kamala Harris because she’s black.'”

“That doesn’t resonate with me. I think it’s great, but she reminds me of acting. I respect her. But that doesn’t mean she should be president of the United States,” he continued. “I believe the Democrats chose her like they were choosing the last person you would want to choose in middle school.”

During the interview, Sewell revealed how welcoming he is to Trump and what the former president has asked of him in the last month.

Before the Republican National Convention, Sewell recalled, he asked the Trump campaign if he could pray at the convention, but the response he received included a suggestion that went further: The Trump campaign asked him to pray. and The opportunity to speak gave him the “privilege of honoring Jesus,” Sewell said.

“And that’s what it’s all about. That’s what our country needs. They need a relationship with Jesus Christ,” he said.

Sewell also said that when Trump visited his church last month, he didn’t ask for an endorsement, but rather for prayer.

“He didn’t ask for my endorsement, he asked for prayer,” Sewell told WXYZ. “Any politician who gets their local church to pray for them is doing their job, and they’re going to do their job well.”
