Thousands of Olympians Enter the Heart of Paris in Massive Flotilla

In the past, large fleets of foreign ships have sailed down the Seine to besiege Paris, posing a direct threat to the Carolingian Empire, but Macron and the people of Paris need not worry about this particular group of sailors: they were invited, and they were just here for fun.

Despite rain and rumors of flooding on Friday, thousands of the world’s best athletes made perhaps the most spectacular entrance in Olympic history as part of the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Surrounded by cheering crowds and fans of every nationality, the star-studded parade made its way through the heart of the City of Love, but it was the first time in Olympic history that the opening ceremony was not held in a stadium.

The idea behind this innovative move was to give ordinary fans the opportunity to watch the iconic ceremony in person, rather than the relatively few with the clout and money to afford to enter the arena.

Celebrations began with a literal explosion of color in honor of the French flag, before the boats carrying the athletes completed the 3.5-mile journey from the Pont d’Austerlitz to the Trocadero.

There were many American fans in the audience.

And Team USA was on board, ready to meet fans.

Athletes weren’t the only ones to appear at the opening ceremony; Lady Gaga also performed from the stairs of a nearby building.

Not only were there U.S. Olympians on the boat, there were also U.S. Olympians watching.
