Joe Biden is pushing for major reforms to the Supreme Court.
He is pushing for term limits for Supreme Court justices and an ethics code that the Legislature could enforce.
He also wants an amendment to presidential immunity that would deny immunity to crimes committed while in office.
President Joe Biden has called on Congress to support his proposals for two major changes to the U.S. Supreme Court and amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
In an op-ed published on the morning of July 29, the president explained his reasons for pursuing reforms that have long been called for by the progressive wing of American politics.
“This nation was founded on a simple yet profound principle: No one is above the law — not the President of the United States, not a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, not anyone,” the president wrote.
White House officials said President Biden plans to ask Congress to support term limits for Supreme Court justices and ethics rules that the Legislature could enforce.
He also plans to propose an amendment to limit the scope of presidential immunity granted in the Constitution, proposing to deny former presidents immunity for crimes committed while in office.
Kamala Harris supports Joe Biden’s efforts.
“The Supreme Court is facing a clear crisis of confidence today, with numerous ethics scandals and a series of decisions overturning long-held precedents calling into question the Court’s impartiality,” Kamala Harris said.
Harris, who is running for president, supported the move. “The Supreme Court is facing a clear crisis of confidence today, as a series of ethics scandals and decisions overturning long-standing precedents call into question its impartiality,” she said.
On the Supreme Court, Biden wants to limit justices to 18 years, which, if fully implemented, would allow the president to appoint new justices every two years.
Biden argued that the Supreme Court’s new code of conduct should require justices to “disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity, and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest.”
“President Biden and Vice President Harris look forward to working with Congress to empower the American people to prevent abuse of presidential power, restore confidence in the Supreme Court, and strengthen the guardrails of our democracy,” a White House official said.
