The mainstream media and Democrats who helped oust President Joe Biden from the 2024 presidential race are now working overtime to reframe how the administration views border control.
Recent Reports Politico The article tried to convince readers that the Biden-Harris administration would take a tougher stance on the border than former President Donald Trump, who it claimed “had a harder time” removing more illegal immigrants than Biden.
“Now that the situation at the southern border has proven embarrassing and unpopular, Democrats are trying to manipulate the numbers.”
“While President Trump denounces the open border, the Biden-Harris administration is turning away far more migrants than President Trump did,” Politico reported.
News media have compared Title 42 expulsions under both administrations.
Title 42, enacted by President Trump and put into effect in March 2020, allowed the federal government to quickly expel undocumented immigrants arriving at the southern border who had recently been in a country with COVID-19. The Biden administration has repealed many of Trump’s border restrictions but has kept Title 42 in place until May 2023.
Politico reported that Biden has used the program to deport more illegal immigrants than the Trump administration, but deeper in the story, the news outlet acknowledges that Trump has carried out far more Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations than the current administration.
The National Immigration Enforcement Center reports that there were just over 3 million encounters with illegal immigrants under the Trump administration, compared to more than 9 million under the Biden administration. Trump used ICE to remove 31.1% of illegal immigrants, while Biden has removed only 4.4%.
Politico reported that one of the reasons President Biden did not allow ICE to process more removals is because the southern border has been overrun with illegal immigrants seeking asylum, forcing the administration to reallocate ICE resources to supporting Customs and Border Protection at the U.S.-Mexico border and away from apprehensions within the country.
From 2021 onwards, CBP Police reported more than 10 million encounters nationwide, a statistic that does not include known or unknown fugitives who were not apprehended by law enforcement officials before entering the country.
Theo Wald, a former senior Trump administration official, told Blaze News that “Kamala Harris’ border policies have allowed record numbers of aliens to enter the country illegally, but deportations by ICE have been only a fraction of the deportations carried out under the Trump administration.”
“Now that the situation at our southern border has proven shameful and unpopular, Democrats are trying to spin the numbers, but the numbers don’t lie,” Wald continued. “With Harris in charge of immigration, there are no deportations, illegal immigrants are getting in and they’re staying. And Americans like Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nangarai are suffering.”
Major media outlets are also trying to erase evidence that Vice President Kamala Harris was once called the “border czar,” an attempt to distance herself from her presidential campaign and Biden’s disastrous response to the illegal immigration crisis. Axios tried to accuse Trump and Republicans of “repeatedly” using the title to refer to Harris, but was quickly corrected. X Community Notesnoted that Axios itself has used the term several times in 2021.
The media assisted the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to make the recent border executive order appear tough on illegal immigration by superficially reporting that the administration would close the southern border if the daily illegal immigration count reached 2,500 for seven consecutive days. However, they failed to mention the order’s long list of exceptions, including that the administration would still allow illegal immigrants into the country if they made an appointment at a port of entry through the CBP One application.
Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has taken a subtle step in positioning the executive order as both a crackdown on illegal border crossings and a show of compassion for asylum seekers. In an interview, he noted that the closure order, if implemented, would only affect illegal immigrants trying to enter the U.S. “between ports of entry.” He also praised the Biden-Harris administration for building additional “legal pathways” for illegal immigrants seeking asylum.
