Security video captures alleged thief trying to steal EV charging cable from Nevada couple’s driveway for copper wiring

A Nevada couple was shocked when they discovered a man was caught on surveillance camera trying to steal an electric vehicle charging cable from their driveway.

Lori, who asked not to give her last name, He told KVVU-TV about an unwanted visitor showing up outside his Las Vegas home.

She said she was woken up in the middle of the night by a notification at home informing her that her electric vehicle’s charging cable had become unplugged.

“I thought it was my fault, that I hadn’t plugged it in correctly,” Lori said. “I checked and was totally surprised because the cord was plugged in all the way.”

Security camera footage showed a man with his shirt wrapped around his face trying to pull the cord out from under the garage door, then when Lori opened the door to check the car, the man ran away.

According to KVUU, thieves are targeting charging cables, hoping to sell the copper wire to scrap yards even though they may only get $15 to $20 per cable for it.

Thieves raiding commercial charging stations and stealing large numbers of cables at once is becoming a problem nationwide: One company that manages about 1,000 charging stations reported 129 incidents of cables being cut so far this year.

Lori’s husband, Glenn, said they will start collecting fees during the day to deter theft.

“From now on, people will charge their cars in the late afternoon and finish charging before they go to sleep, so these crimes of opportunity won’t happen,” he said.
