5 shot during Oakland street takeover; video captures spectators taking cover as gunfire rings out

Five people shot dead during major street protests in Oakland over the weekend, police say Said Preliminary findings.

The car commotion was captured on security cameras around 3:40 a.m. Sunday as hundreds of people looked on at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Fruitvale Avenue.

“When they think there will be no repercussions or consequences, they come out guns blazing.”

The commotion ended when gunshots rang out and spectators were seen taking cover in cars and behind trees.

Three of the injured were taken to Highland Hospital, while the remaining two were admitted to another hospital, said Sergeant Huy Nguyen of the Oakland Police Department.

Police said they recovered about 90 shell casings in the shooting.

KNTV-TV interviewed business owners and residents. Said They were fed up with the rise in crime.

“Auckland is becoming more and more of a safe haven for these criminals,” said Hamza Ghalib, owner of the Mocha House restaurant. “If there’s no retribution and no consequences, they’re coming out guns blazing.”

La Perla owner Jose Ortiz said the crime makes no one want to invest in new businesses.

Organizers and promoters of illegal street car shows face up to six months in jail and fines of up to $5,000, and participants can have their vehicles impounded, but critics say the rules are not enforced enough to deter street snatchers.

“The law is clear that you can’t come in here and destroy roads and crosswalks in my city, but there needs to be a police presence,” said City Councilman Noel Gallo.

Police said the shooting victim is in stable condition, but no one has yet been arrested in the incident.
