Kamala Harris a Potential ‘Disaster’ for Israel, Jews

Editor-in-Chief Zvika Klein Jerusalem PostOn Thursday night, the Times published an editorial titled, “Editor’s Note: A Harris Presidency Could Be a Disaster for Israel and the Jewish People.”

Klein pointed to Harris’ recent indications that she would consider an arms embargo against Israel, which her campaign has since walked back, but which he said fit a pattern of her sympathizing with radical anti-Israel views and pro-Palestinian activists within her party.

Klein Written:

Harris’s openness to an arms embargo, as she suggested during the Detroit meeting, is not an isolated incident. Over the years, Harris’ actions and statements have consistently raised alarms about her commitment to Israel. In February 2019, when Rep. Ilhan Omar used anti-Semitic tropes to accuse U.S. support for Israel of being “all about the money” and that American Jews have “allegiance to foreign nations,” Harris’ response was eerily lukewarm. Instead of explicitly condemning Omar’s remarks, Harris expressed concern that the criticism might put Omar at risk and did not categorically denounce anti-Semitic rhetoric within her party.

Harris’ Endorsement Iran nuclear deal The JCPOA has also been controversial. Harris supported the agreement in 2015, but many critics say it empowers Iran, a major threat to Israel. By rejoining the JCPOA, Harris would align herself with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which has become increasingly hostile toward Israel. This alignment is deeply worrying to those who believe the agreement is not enough to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Harris’ public comments have sometimes appeared to weaken Israel’s negotiating position: in March 2024, she called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, effectively giving Hamas a lifeline.
