Republican who voted to impeach Trump advances in Washington House race

Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), one of the few Republican incumbents who voted in favor of impeaching former President Trump, will likely advance to the general election to represent Washington’s 4th Congressional District, Decision Desk HQ predicts.

Newhouse won a tough contest in a conservative district despite strong opposition from members of his own party. Washington state uses a nonpartisan, blanket primary in which the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the November general election.

Rep. Newhouse has represented the district since 2015, but became a controversial member of the Republican Party when he voted to impeach President Trump after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, accusing him of inciting the mob that stormed the Capitol. He joined nine other House Republicans who voted in favor of impeaching President Trump.

Newhouse faced widespread backlash from Trump’s biggest supporters, with the former president endorsing one of his challengers in the 2022 primary, but he overcame the challenge and won reelection, making him one of two pro-impeachment House Republicans to win reelection.

Newhouse is facing off against two Trump-endorsed opponents: former NASCAR driver Jerrod Sessler and former Republican Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley.

Sesler also has the endorsement of the Washington State Republican Party and the Douglas County Republican Party, which includes the 4th District.

But Mr. Newhouse has raised and spent more money than Messrs. Sessler and Smiley combined, and he needs to win in November to stay in the race, but he has a good chance of winning another two years.
