House subpoenas records on ‘ramshackle, crime-ridden’ illegal alien shelter in NYC after DHS ‘repeatedly blocked’ inquiries

The House Committee on Natural Resources Summon The Biden-Harris administration’s Department of Homeland Security on Friday fined the agency for failing to submit a report on New York City’s temporary shelters for undocumented immigrants, according to the committee. press release.

Last year, the federal government signed a contract with the city to set up the camp at Floyd Bennett Field, a National Park Service site. Since then, a House committee has opened an investigation into the contract and has requested additional information about the decision to use the site as a shelter for illegal immigrants. But the committee alleges that the Department of Homeland Security has not complied with those requests.

“Democratic bureaucrats have repeatedly thwarted congressional investigations.”

The subpoena, issued by committee chairman Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-Arkansas), said the Department of Homeland Security “[ed] Rather than responding in a timely manner to legitimate oversight requests, they have demonstrated opposition to the Committee’s investigation.”

“Homeland Security blamed production delays on other priorities, software outages, backlogs and time to review thousands of pages of customized search results,” the subpoena states.

The committee said the federal government[ing] Production may be rejected in the future[ing] To work meaningfully with the committee, and there is no end in sight.”

“Using our national parks to house migrants and cover up Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ border crisis is a gross misuse of our national treasures. It sets a disturbing precedent for the future of our nation’s public lands. This committee has been conducting oversight for months about the shady backroom deals that have led to the construction of crime-ridden, desolate encampments in our national parks,” Westerman said in a statement about the recent subpoenas.

“Yet Democratic bureaucrats have repeatedly thwarted Congressional investigations,” Westerman continued. “At best, they’ve sent heavily redacted documents that provide no useful information. At worst, they’ve refused to even comply with Congress’ requests. I refuse to play into their tactics. Today, I will use the full authority of my committee to get to the bottom of this disastrous decision and hold the Biden-Harris Administration accountable for its desecration of America’s most cherished public landscape.”

The committee hopes that its investigation into the leases will uncover “abuse of power” by the government.

Anything else?

Last year, the administration of Mayor Eric Adams (Democrat) converted part of a remote airfield into a temporary shelter for undocumented immigrants. The site was expected to house about 2,000 people.

Many people were shuttled to the site after some of the first buses refused to stay in the tent city, complaining that the location was too isolated. Local Republicans and Democrats opposed the government’s decision to use the site for housing.

Governor Adams imposed a nighttime curfew on residents of the shelter earlier this year after New York residents complained about increased panhandling and crime near the shelter. Governor Westerman wrote to the National Park Service in March requesting more information about the screening process for residents after reports of an “increase in crime” in the area.

“Widely reported crimes in and around the Floyd Bennett Field migrant camp include domestic violence, assault, shoplifting, prostitution, and panhandling scams,” the lawmakers wrote. “The Committee is deeply concerned about the inherent safety risks to park employees, surrounding area residents, and migrants as a result of the Biden Administration’s management of America’s public lands, particularly Floyd Bennett Field, and its decision to lease national park lands for a migrant camp.”
