Celine Dion Jabs Trump for Playing ‘Titanic’ Song at Rally

(AFP) Celine Dion on Saturday criticised Donald Trump for using a song she wrote for “Titanic,” the disaster film about the sinking of the luxury liner Titanic, at a campaign rally.

The Republican presidential candidate was mocked on social media after Dion performed her 1997 song “My Heart Will Go On” at a rally in Montana on Friday and a video of her performing the song was projected on a big screen.

Dion’s management team and record label Sony Music Entertainment Canada said in a statement about X that the use of the song and video was not authorized “in any way.”

“Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use… And what about that song?” he added.

Social media users have drawn similarities between Trump’s campaign and the sinking ship at the centre of James Cameron’s film.

Since Kamala Harris took over from President Joe Biden in the US presidential election and took the White House, Trump appears to be on the losing side.

Before Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, Harris appeared to be on track to retake the White House, but since replacing Biden at the top of the list of potential candidates and naming Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as his running mate, Harris has made some big strides.

“My Heart Will Go On” was released on Dion’s album Let’s Talk About Love and on the soundtrack to Cameron’s film Titanic. The song became one of the biggest hits of all time, selling 18 million copies and earning Dion an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and multiple Grammy Awards.

Dion, 56, has been forced to cancel a series of shows in 2023 and 2024, saying she is no longer fit to tour after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

But last month she delighted fans by singing from the top of the Eiffel Tower at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
