JD Vance defends wife Usha against ‘disgraceful’ attacks over Indian heritage: She’s ‘way out of their league’

Sen. J.D. Vance came to a fierce defense of his wife, Usha, when asked about attacks on her Indian heritage in an interview that aired Sunday.

Senator Vance appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” as part of a weekend media offensive that included interviews with multiple networks. During the wide-ranging discussion, host Margaret Brennan mentioned Senator Vance’s “very capable wife,” Usha, and noted the senator’s recent comments that white supremacists have attacked her because “she’s not white.”

Vance is married to Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants and a successful lawyer, and they have three mixed-race children.

“How concerned are you that this kind of hatred would make its way to the White House?” Brennan asked.

“It follows us wherever we go because that’s the nature of the American public sphere, and it’s shameful,” Vance said. “I love my wife. I’m very proud of her. I’m very fortunate to have met her and to have had the opportunity to build a life with her. And my view on this is, if people want to attack me, if they want to attack my policy views, they’re welcome to. I was on board with it. My wife wasn’t on board with it.”

“By the way, she’s way above their level…” he added, “So I wish they’d just shut up or at least focus on me.”

Brennan pressed Vance on how he remained calm when his family was personally attacked in public.

“Yeah, it definitely gets annoying sometimes,” he admitted, “when your family is attacked for something that none of us have any control over.”

Still, Vance maintained that his wife is “pretty tough” and knows what the family wants when former President Trump announced himself as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election last month.

Usha Vance recently spoke on “Fox & Friends” about how she deals with the negative press she and her now-famous husband have received, saying she’s developed a “thick skin.”

“It can be difficult. And, you know, sometimes you don’t see the whole thing and sometimes you do see it and you think, this is not the JD that I know, this is not accurate. And it can range from discussions and thoughts about what to do next and how to live. But we’ve been doing this for a while now and I’m getting used to it and I’m getting a little thicker. So, I try not to let it affect the way I live my life,” she said.

She added that she has found it helpful to avoid reading the news.

“Someone gave me some really good advice, just not to read the news so much, not to bury your head in the sand or anything like that. JD’s just out there. He’s talking about stuff. He’s thinking stuff. I think he needs to have someone in his life that’s going to hear it directly from him, instead of just hearing what other people are saying about him. So I think that would really help,” she said.
