Walz has been embroiled in controversy since being nominated as Harris’ running mate due to his service in the Army National Guard, with reports of his 24-year service record proliferating as questions about it grow and “defamation” claims gain momentum.
The criticism, some of which has come from veterans who served with Waltz, has focused on his decision to retire just months before his battalion was scheduled to deploy to Iraq as war raged in the Middle East after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Minnesota National Guard said Waltz submitted his retirement papers at least five months before the battalion received orders to deploy.
