Inflation has forced newlyweds to cut costs in unexpected ways, including cutting the soaring cost of wedding flowers.
According to wedding planning website Zola, the average price of a wedding in 2024 will exceed $30,000.
Wedding experts blame inflation for hitting every aspect of wedding planning, right down to the flowers you pick.
Some couples and florists are surprised by the rising prices.

A New York bride says she wanted to be “fully prepared” on her wedding day.
“We wanted flowers everywhere,” says bride-to-be Emily Reynolds, who was determined to have the wedding of her dreams. “We also wanted a floral chandelier that we saw on Pinterest and knew was a must.”

According to Consumer Price Index data, the price of flowers rose 9.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from a year earlier. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The University of Minnesota School of Horticulture says 80 percent of cut flowers brought into the U.S. are imported, and a Los Angeles-based florist says imported flowers are more durable than locally grown flowers.

Alison Franchi, owner of La Petite Gardenia, says that’s where the higher prices come from: “There are a lot of costs on the back end, like shipping the flowers around the country and the world.”
She has been in the florist business for 20 years and says the price of flowers has increased significantly in that time.
Franchi says fuel, labor, packaging and wholesale costs are contributing to the price hike, which she says she has to make.
“Right now it’s wedding season and it’s summer, so a lot of people want peonies and everyone loves peonies, so supply and demand are meeting and prices are going up a lot.”

She says:[peonies] Before it was $2.50 or $3 per bottle, now it’s $7.50 or $10 per bottle.”
The bride-to-be, Reynolds, decided that the price was too high and cut off all the fresh flowers.
