On Friday’s episode of CNN’s “The Source,” Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) spoke about Vice President Kamala Harris, a 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, saying, “I think she’s a very good person. I think she’s a …Federal government bans unfair food price hikesThe proposal was not accepted because “the devil is in the details” and “where does this end? what are the details? how do you define price gouging? that’s a problem we have to solve.”
“In your economic plan, would you support a federal ban on food price increases?” host Kaitlan Collins asked.
Goldman responded: “I think price gouging is a significant issue that needs to be addressed. The devil is in the details. We can certainly have price gouging policies that encourage competition, encourage growth, and continue to encourage businesses to innovate. That’s the balance that Vice President Harris talked about today. The objective is not to break up American businesses, but to make sure that businesses are paying their fair share, that they’re not taking unfair advantage of working Americans, of Americans who have to buy food, with anti-competitive conduct. As she pointed out today, when inflation is currently below 3 percent, and you have anti-competitive conduct that drives up prices, that’s a problem and it needs to be addressed. I think some of the ideas that she put forward today will make a big difference for the vast majority of Americans and enable people to be successful in pursuing the American Dream, buying a home, raising a family.”
Collins later said, “We heard from Jason Furman, who was the top economist in the Obama administration, who said he actually believes there are no benefits and only drawbacks to banning food price gouging.”
Goldman responded: “Maybe. I understand Jason’s point of view. Where do we end this? What are the details? How do we define price gouging? Those are issues we have to work out. But on the flip side of that are Donald Trump’s tariffs and, as Vice President Harris said, [are] “The president will institute a national sales tax, further raising grocery prices and making everything much more expensive for ordinary Americans, all while benefiting his billionaire class cronies.”
