Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez enters no contest plea in attempted murder case

Cain Velazquez pleaded guilty to a 2022 attempted murder case.

The UFC champion pleaded not guilty to felony assault and firearm possession charges as part of a negotiated agreement with prosecutors, according to Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen.

The charges stem from an incident in which Velazquez allegedly fired shots at another vehicle during a high-speed pursuit, which also contained a man accused of sexually abusing Velazquez’s 4-year-old relative.

The man’s father-in-law was also in the car and was wounded in the shooting.

Velasquez, who retired from competitive mixed martial arts in 2019, was scheduled to go on trial in September. Rosen’s office said he could still face prison time.

But the not guilty plea means the premeditated murder charge against Velazquez will be dropped. Velazquez will no longer face a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

“This defendant decided to be judge, jury and executioner, and his actions endangered innocent bystanders, including young children and their parents, who could have been injured or killed when he shot his intended victims,” Rosen said in a statement.

“We have great law enforcement in this county. Let’s let them do their jobs.”
