California high school principal placed on leave after video surfaces of inappropriate dance with mascot

The principal of a central California high school has been placed on administrative leave following an investigation into a video showing him engaging in an allegedly inappropriate dance with the school mascot during a back-to-school assembly.

The Merced Union High School District released a statement to Fox News Digital saying that Robert Nunez, principal of Buhac Colony High School in Atwater, has been placed on administrative leave, effective Aug. 19.

The school district said the move was in response to an incident at an Aug. 16 back-to-school assembly.

“The district is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the situation. While the investigation continues, Mr. Nunez will not be participating in any school-related responsibilities or activities,” Viviana Fuentes, the district’s communications director, said in a statement.

Fuentes added that the decision was made as part of the school’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students, faculty and staff.

The roughly 40-second video posted to social media shows Nunez sitting in an office chair in the middle of the gym floor, leaning back, as the school mascot seductively approaches her, while Ginuwine’s song “Pony” plays and a crowd of students looks on.

Nunes then fires a cannon full of gold confetti and swaps places with the mascot.

The video then shows Nunes placing his hands on the mascot’s chest and sliding them over the mascot.

Several students joined Nunez and Mascot on the floor and asked if they wanted to say anything.

“What happens in Buhac stays in Buhac,” Nunes shouted to the cheering crowd before carrying the mascot off the floor in a wheelchair.

Several people have commented on the video with mixed feelings about the dance.

“If the principal is the ‘best friend’ of every student, the school is lost,” one person commented.

“Why does everything have to be sexualised?” asked another.

“This is truly disgusting and should not take place in schools,” another wrote.

However, another person disagreed, writing: “Take it easy, they’re having fun.”

Fuentes said the district will provide updates as they occur, while respecting the confidentiality of the investigative process.
