Dolphins cut ex-Jets QB Mike White as he loses out on backup job

Mike White is on the market.

The former Jets quarterback was released by the Dolphins on Sunday, but the team has until Tuesday at 4pm ET to cut its roster down to 53 players.

White was competing with Skylar Thompson for the backup quarterback position behind Tua Tagovailoa with the Dolphins, but Thompson won out.

A fifth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2018, White signed with the Jets’ practice squad in 2019 and briefly became a fan and locker room favorite during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

Making his first career start in place of an injured Zach Wilson, White led the Jets to a stunning 34-31 victory over the Bengals on October 21, 2021.

He played in two more games that year, but lost both.

White played four more games a year later, but finished with one win and three losses.

During his time with the Jets, White completed 62.6 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

He signed with the Dolphins last year and served as Tagovailoa’s backup.

Thompson completed 19 of 27 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Throughout the preseason, White completed 20 of 43 passes for 179 yards but no touchdowns or interceptions.
