The Big Apple is set to heat up Wednesday with temperatures reaching the mid-90s Fahrenheit, followed by thunderstorms and a cold front.
The high temperature in New York City is expected to reach 94 degrees, but humidity will push the heat index to around 101 degrees during the hottest parts of the day, Fox Weather meteorologist Jordan Overton told The Post.
A heat watch was issued for New York at 11 a.m., with a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms from 2 p.m.
Overton noted that Wednesday will mark the fifth day so far in August with temperatures above 90 degrees, including a three-day heatwave earlier this month.
“It's not as unusual as people think. August is the hottest month in New York City, and it's very close to July to be exact,” he said, describing the sweltering heat.
“That's about average.”
Temperatures are rising as the U.S. Open gets underway this week at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens.
Grand Slam tournament organizers said Monday they expect attendance to reach a record high of 1 million this year.
Meanwhile, a severe heat warning is due to be issued for a stretch of New Jersey and Pennsylvania between Trenton and Philadelphia, where the heat index could reach a maximum of 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents are advised to avoid excessive outdoor activity, stay hydrated and stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible.
The Metuchen School District in Middlesex County, New Jersey, announced that students would be dismissed early on Wednesday for the first day of classes due to extreme heat. NJ.com reported.
The heat advisory will remain in effect until 8 p.m., at which point a cold front with thunderstorms is expected to move in.
Storms won't be common, but when they do occur they can be strong to severe, with wind gusts exceeding 50 mph and the threat of large hail.
Luckily for New Yorkers, if they can make it through Wednesday, an evening storm and cold front will bring a further drop in temperatures, with a high of about 78 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday.
