Dallas police officer killed, 2 others injured: ‘We lost one of our own’

Dallas police said Friday they were “hurt” after one officer was killed and two others wounded by a suspect who died in a shootout with police after a pursuit.

According to investigators, the incident began around 10 p.m. Thursday when Dallas Police responded to an officer in distress in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. Upon arriving on scene, investigators found an officer “shot inside a marked patrol vehicle” and engaged in a gunfight with a suspect at the scene, during which two other officers were shot.

“The suspect fled the scene and officers pursued the suspect until he arrived in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway in Louisville,” Dallas police added. “Preliminary investigation determined that the suspect exited the vehicle with a long gun and was shot by a Dallas Police Department officer, who later died at the scene.”

“Our department has been hit hard,” Dallas police spokeswoman Christine Roman said at a news conference early Friday. “We have officers injured and in the hospital, and we lost one of our own officers.”

The Texas suspect was caught on video allegedly committing violent acts, including stabbing and confronting people.
