The six hostages found dead in an underground tunnel in the Gaza Strip on Saturday – including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg Pollin – were found in Rafah, a city that Vice President Kamala Harris has warned Israel is off limits to.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February that Israel was ready to invade Rafah, the main city on the Gaza-Egypt border where Hamas leaders are believed to be hiding and holding some of the Israeli hostages.
Foreign Secretary Kamala Harris echoed the Biden administration's warnings, telling Israel not to enter Rafah and saying many Palestinian civilians could be killed, warning of possible “consequences” and suggesting the US would reserve its weapons.
“I studied the maps,” Harris said.

Israel decided it needed to enter Rafah, where it killed hundreds of terrorists with minimal civilian casualties, though its leaders are believed to have moved elsewhere in the Gaza Strip, and rescued one hostage and recovered several bodies, including Goldberg Pollin and five others.
Israel also established control over the Philadelphia Corridor, a key strategic road along the border with Egypt. Israeli forces discovered and destroyed a tunnel that Hamas had been using to smuggle weapons and other supplies into the Gaza Strip.
IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Sunday that the six were brutally killed by Hamas as Israeli forces closed in on the hostages' location, likely based on information provided by the hostages who were rescued last week.
