Moreno, who backs states on abortion, supports ‘common-sense restrictions’ after 15 weeks

Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno said Sunday that he supports “common sense restrictions” on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy at the federal level, but argued the issue should be “largely” left to states to decide.

“My position on abortion is very clear. I am personally pro-life. I believe we have religious freedom in America, so we should be able to have our own personal religious beliefs,” Moreno said in an interview with Chris Styrewalt on NewsNation's “The Hill Sunday,” when asked about his “evolution” on the abortion issue.

“I believe this is primarily a state issue, and President Trump has spoken about that, and that's what Dobbs has done,” he continued, referring to the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned the federal right to abortion.

Styewalt said the 2022 candidates are: Explained myself He said he was “completely pro-life, with no exceptions.” During the Republican primary earlier this year, he criticized a fellow candidate who opposed a bill that would have banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, with very few exceptions.

But Moreno has made it clear on the issue that abortion laws should be left to individual states to decide, so Stierwald pressed Moreno to explain why Republican senators are “wrong to establish federal guidelines” that would restrict abortion access at the federal level.

“My hope is that at some point after 15 weeks, we'll see some common-sense restrictions put in place,” Moreno said in an interview.

“But Chris, that's all Democrats want to talk about, because they can't talk about their record on high prices, open borders, instability around the world, attacks on American energy, failure to stand up to China,” he continued, moving on to other issues.

Moreno, who faces Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) in November, will have to walk a tricky tightrope on the issue of abortion. Recently voted for overwhelmingly To protect access to abortion.
