A violent shootout broke out at a Bronx bar on Monday when a booted patron returned with a gun, shot and killed the cook, then was shot by an off-duty parole officer who tried in vain to flee in an SUV.
The violent Labor Day shootout happened at Cutty Bar and Lounge on Boston Road just after 1:45 a.m. An NYPD spokesman said officers were called to the scene after receiving a report of a shooting victim.
Police sources said the 40-year-old gunman was chased out of the bar, then returned with a gun from his car and shot the bar's 37-year-old cook in the right leg.

But an off-duty, armed state parole officer was at the scene and returned fire, shooting the suspect multiple times in the torso, police and officials said.
The wounded gunman, whose name has not been released, managed to make it to a white SUV and attempted to escape, but crashed it into a nearby pillar.
Both victims were rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where the cook is in stable condition and the gunman is in critical condition after the early morning shootout, police said.
This incident is currently under investigation.
