An illegal immigrant was arrested Sunday afternoon after he allegedly attacked a 14-year-old girl at a baseball game in Lowell, Indiana.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office arrested 26-year-old Dimas Gabriel Yanez over the weekend after an extensive manhunt. WMAQ TV Reported.
“Right now I'm swinging it at her.”
A teenage girl was watching her brother's baseball game early Sunday morning. Stabbed Reporter Gabriel Yanez. The suspect also reportedly tried to stab the girl's mother when she tried to stop the assault.
“It was a terrible experience,” said Matthew Lamian, coach of the baseball team that was playing when the stabbing occurred. WLS-TV“He jumped on her, pushed her down, smashed her umbrella, and then he pulled out what I call a Bowie knife, a large knife, about 16 or 18 inches, and started swinging it at her.”
Several fathers who were watching the game pursued the suspect, who fled on foot after the stabbing, but he disappeared, Lamian said.
The sheriff's office said the suspect ran into a wooded area behind a residential neighborhood. Multiple Agencies Police assisted with the search, including with police dogs and an aviation unit. Authorities eventually located the suspect in a cornfield and arrested him. Authorities believe he had attempted to cut his hair to change his appearance shortly before his arrest.
The girl sustained injuries to her hand and was treated at a hospital before being released the next day. No other injuries were reported from the random violence.
Police said the suspect, Gabriel Yañez, a Honduran national, was deported from the United States in 2018 and then illegally re-entered the country.
Law enforcement officials believe he may have been involved in other criminal activity across the United States since returning illegally.
Local authorities notified the U.S. Department of Homeland Security about the arrest.
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita (Republican), who has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration, has filed a lawsuit against nearby “sanctuary” jurisdictions for providing “safe havens for illegal immigrants” in violation of state law. East Chicagoand its abolition “Welcome City Ordinance” Rokita said the bill is a response to the attorney general's legal action and called it a “huge victory for hard-working Indianans and legal immigrants who came to this great country the right way.”
