French authorities confirmed that at least five people were killed in the attempt to cross the Channel, according to AFP news agency.

The rescue operation is taking place off the coast of Le Portel, a town of about 9,000 people south of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
Rescue teams were called out at around 11:30 a.m. French time, according to local television station France 3.

Reuters reported that a spokesman for the French coast guard confirmed that more than 50 people had been rescued in the Channel and were in need of medical treatment.
