The full manifesto of the shooter who killed three students and three adults at Nashville's Covenant School in 2023 was released. Tennessee Star Authorities appear to have tried to hide the document from the public for over a year.
The 90-page manifesto offers important insight into why Audrey Elizabeth Hale, known as Aiden, decided to attack her former school. Hale was shot and killed by responding Nashville Police Department officers. Police recovered Hale's manifesto from the gunman's car.
On the first page, Hale writes in large letters: “Why isn't my brain working properly? I Wrong!!! Nothing on earth can save me. Endless pain“Religion doesn't save us.”
The notebook also doubles as Hale's diary, showing that the shooter was clearly mentally unstable. On January 17, 2023, she wrote: “Everything makes me sad. I'm sad about everything. I want to say goodbye. P.S. It all happened so suddenly. I'm unstable.”
“I hope the death toll is high.”
Hale wrote about his hatred for his father. In the section “Daddy Issues”, he wrote, “I hated the way my father lived his life as a cranky old man. All cranky, good-for-nothing psychos should die. They were all good-for-nothing garbage. A waste of life, a waste of time.”
Hale wrote at length about having “penises in her head.”
“I swear to God I'm a man. … I was destined to be born this way.”
In the days leading up to the shooting, Hale spoke of her deep pain over not being a man and her hatred for God: “If God doesn't give me a boy's body in heaven, then Jesus is dead.”
On the day of the shooting, March 27, her tone turned jubilant. That was the day she finally let out all the pent-up rage. Hale called it “Death Day” and pulled out her gun. She showed no remorse for her plan to target young schoolchildren.
“Today is the day. It's finally here! I can't believe it. … I'm a little nervous, but I'm excited. … I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm ready. … I hope that's not the case. … I hope that the death toll is high.”
Tennessee Star editor-in-chief Michael Patrick Leahy said the paper was publishing the full statement because it was in the public interest to know what a killer's mind was thinking.
“We lawfully obtained Audrey Elizabeth Hale documents, Minnesota State Police investigative documents and Minnesota State Police crime scene photographs in June 2024 from a source familiar with the Minnesota State Police investigation. These documents and photographs helped inform the public of the underlying reasons for this heinous attack and helped to spark public discussion about what must be done to prevent such violent acts in the future. We have documented massive failures of the mental health system as the root cause of Hale's reprehensible behavior,” Leahy said.
