Orlando Bloom has lost about a third of his body weight to play a comedic boxer in his new movie “The Cut,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week.
The 47-year-old actor detailed the grueling process, admitting that it didn't just affect his physical health.
“I reduced the amount of food I ate over a period of three months until just before filming. [when] I was at my lightest weight, I lost 52 pounds and I was about 185 pounds when I started,” Bloom said. Variety Toronto Film Festival Studios. “I lost a lot of weight and I was having a lot of mental problems.”

In a conversation with People MagazineThe “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Lord of the Rings” star detailed how he prepared for what he called his “gruelling” role, saying, “I was so hungry, so edgy. My last three weeks in London before filming started I was living on nothing but tuna and cucumbers.”
In the film, Bloom's character is tasked with losing a significant amount of weight in six days in order to return to the ring.
“I lost a lot of weight and I was having a lot of mental problems.”

Bloom said his longtime partner, singer Katy Perry, was stunned by his transformation. After seeing the film, Perry was “astonished,” Bloom said. “She saw the movie and she was like, 'I want a hard drink.'”
But she also cried.
“She was really touched. She knew what she needed,” Bloom said.

Bloom said that while filming, he thought he might not be successful.
“I honestly thought I was going to die,” he told the outlet, adding that Perry had always supported him. “She was always there for me, looking out for the kids and everything. It's hard for the family.”
Bloom and Perry welcomed their first child, a daughter, Daisy Dove, in 2020. Bloom is a first-time father, having welcomed son Flynn with ex-wife Miranda Kerr in 2011.

Bloom's co-star, Caitriona Balfe, told the outlet that having a family only made the difficult filming process even more difficult.
“You can do that when you're alone. Being single is one thing. We were all young before we had families. [and] You can immerse yourself in something, but then when you come home you have to be a parent.”
Balfe said the British actor looked “haggard” before filming began.
“The transformation was shocking. I thought, 'It looks like a raisin.'”
