Just when you thought English Teacher It was thought that the virus could not become any more contagious, but “Kayla Syndrome” proves this.
In the third episode of Brian Jordan Alvarez's hit FX series, Romy Mars (singer/TikTok sensation/daughter of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars) stars as Kayla Stevenson, a student in Mr. Marquez's (Alvarez) class who's reeling from a recent diagnosis she's fabricating for attention: “asymptomatic Tourette's syndrome.” Bravo. As Mars' babysitter boyfriend, Ali, puts it, bravo.One.

By definition (her family is A-list!), Mars has joined the ranks of Nipobabies and is undeniably dominating in Hollywood, but anyone who saw her surprisingly charming attempt at cooking pasta with vodka sauce (while not knowing the difference between garlic, onion, and shallots) knows she has a naturally magnetic screen presence.
English TeacherThe two-part premiere of “The Kayla Syndrome” teased viewers that the students of Morrison Hensley High School have appeared in some of the series' funniest moments, from book club get-togethers to the famous “Powder Puff” routine. They're played by a talented cast of young stars, including Aaliyah's interlude, Ben Bondurant, Mason Douglas, Dave Z. Martin and Scarlett Amber Hernandez. Episode three, “The Kayla Syndrome,” ensures that the students' streak of winning moments continues by letting Mars shine.

While Kayla keeps her cool, her best friend Chelsea (Ivy Wolk, Another familiar face on TikTok) gives Marquez a thorough lecture on his self-diagnosed condition, as Wolk delivers some scathing critiques (it's now called “Kayla Syndrome,” aka “KS” instead of “AT”!), while Marquez nods, rolls his eyes, and coughs so gently and perfectly timed that it's hard to contain your laughter. English TeacherThe students have demonstrated that they are fully capable of handling the lessons taught by their teachers.

Overall, Episode 3 is a lovely episode that expertly explores the complicated dynamics of high school friendships while following the escalating potential workplace romance between Evan and Harry (Langston Kerman). English Teacher The film seamlessly juggles and intertwines multiple storylines, all leading up to the homecoming dance where Kayla is crowned queen. After Markie (Sean Patton) tells Kayla that the best way to gain power is to give it away, Kayla performatively places the tiara on Chelsea's head and triumphs among her friend group by slyly humiliating her with a generous but self-serving speech. The scene works because of Mars' ability to mask the necessary sass with humility, shyness, and quiet kindness while never quite eliminating it.
Another casting success was English TeacherThe natural humor, attitude and star power that Mars exudes on TikTok is perfectly reflected in the series. We see glimpses of joy, jealousy and frustration from Mars, and while his screen time is limited, he makes the most of his moments in the spotlight. Francis Ford Coppolawe hope we won't see the last of Kayla at Morrison-Hensley High School.
