Harris campaign calls for second debate after Trump’s performance is panned by critics

Several campaign officials for Vice President Kamala Harris called for a second debate less than an hour after the first showdown between the Democratic nominee and former President Donald Trump ended.

“This was fun. Let's do it again in October,” Harris campaign spokesman Brian Fallon wrote to X.

The Harris campaign also called for a debate in October during a fiery press conference.

“Vice President Harris is ready for debate two. What about Donald Trump?” asked Jen O'Malley Dillon, campaign chair for the Harris-Waltz campaign.

“Donald Trump was totally incoherent. He was angry and agitated,” O'Malley Dillon assessed, referring to the 45th president's responses about abortion, Jan. 6 and the spectre of Project 2025.

Harris' communications director, Michael Tyler, told The Washington Post that the campaign plans to hold another debate in mid-October.

“We are very keen to hold another debate in October,” he said, adding that “initial discussions about a second debate” were already taking place.

Trump, 78, has already accepted an invitation from NBC News to participate in the Sept. 25 debate, but Harris has yet to do so.

The former president also agreed to the Sept. 4 debate, which was filmed town hall-style in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, after Harris declined an invitation from Fox News.

“He's already accepted the NBC and Fox debates. It's Kamala Harris who hasn't accepted the previous debates,” Daniel Alvarez, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, told The Washington Post.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt told The Washington Post that the former president's campaign would “absolutely” be interested in a debate with the vice president in October.

Leavitt also noted that it had previously been agreed that the debate would take place on September 25th.

Networks are poised to join in the move, scheduled for October.

On Tuesday night, Fox News reiterated an earlier offer to host a second presidential debate between Harris and Trump, with executives from the media company sending letters to both sides inviting them to participate.

According to Fox News, the letter cited the outlet's high ratings and “strength and reputation,” and suggested a format similar to Tuesday's ABC News debate and a June forum between President Trump and President Biden.
