Trump vows to eliminate taxes on overtime — a potential winner among some of ‘the hardest-working citizens’

President Donald Trump I swore President Trump announced at a rally in Tucson, Arizona on Thursday that he would eliminate all taxes on overtime pay, an unprecedented proposal for the federal government. It's part of a series of broader tax cuts, one of which appears popular enough that Sen. Kamala Harris is adopting it for her own tax cut plan.

“We're going to eliminate all taxes on overtime,” Trump said. “Do you know what that means? Think about it.”

Trump suggested that people would be more motivated to work if they knew the government wasn't taking money from their taxes, and that businesses would find it easier to recruit and retain staff.

“It's time for working men and women to finally get a break.”

“The people who work overtime are some of our hardest working citizens. And for too long, no one in Washington cared about them,” Trump continued. “They're police officers, nurses, factory workers, construction workers, truck drivers, machine operators. It's time for these working men and women to finally get a break.”

Department of Labor under Trump The rules were issued An additional 1.3 million workers will receive overtime pay in 2019. This will be achieved by raising the wage levels that companies must pay workers so that they do not have to pay more than 1.5 times their regular wage for working more than 40 hours a week.

As a result of the 2019 and 2024 threshold increases, many Americans would be able to avoid paying hard-earned overtime wages to the government under President Trump's tax proposal.

Reuters attention The proposal would be a first for the federal government, but Alabama led the way when it became the first state in the nation to exempt hourly workers from state taxes on overtime pay this year, though the measure is only temporary.

It is unclear whether Harris, who was recently exposed for copying and pasting policies from her former vice presidential nominee, will claim the proposal as her own.
