Vance, Brennan spar over Springfield migrant claims

Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio and CBS News' Margaret Brennan sparred Sunday in Springfield, Ohio, over a false claim that Haitian immigrants are eating pets.

“I know the Republican mayor of Springfield told ABC News, 'We got hit in a way that we shouldn't have been hit,'” Brennan said on “Face the Nation.” “The mayor said, 'All of these federal politicians who have hurt our city need to know that they've hurt our city, and it was their words that did it.' Your words. Do you regret it?”

“Margaret, we have been hearing about these issues for months, possibly years. The issue here is not that Donald Trump and I sued over what happened in Springfield.”

“No, I spoke about the issues and I quoted Governor DeWine talking about deeper issues. I'm not asking about that. We put it in writing. I'm asking about your words. That's your responsibility,” Brennan said, cutting Vance off.

“But Margaret, you recorded it after Donald Trump brought it to your attention, and with all due respect to the mayor of Springfield…” Vance said.

“You tweeted that on September 9th,” Brennan responded.

Vance also got into a heated exchange with CNN's “State of the Union” anchor Dana Bash on Sunday over the Haitian migrant allegations. He doubled down on the false claims on Monday, and his running mate, former President Donald Trump, referenced them in Tuesday's debate with Vice President Harris.

“What have they done to our country by allowing millions of people into our country? And look what's happening to our towns. [in the] “A lot of towns in America don't want to have the conversation,” Trump said during the debate. “Aurora isn't going to be one of them.” [or] “Springfield. A lot of towns don't want to talk about it because it's so embarrassing. In Springfield, we eat dogs.”
