Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw told reporters Sunday night that the gunman was able to get onto former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago golf course because security was lax because he was a former president.
Bradshaw detailed the second assassination attempt on Trump in the past three months, which was thwarted when the Secret Service found a rifle lodged in the fence next to the hole Trump was scheduled to play.
Bradshaw said that if Trump had been a sitting president, local police would have surrounded the property.
Well, you have to understand. Golf courses are surrounded by bushes. If someone goes into the bushes, they can barely see. And if he [Trump] Because where he is right now is not a sitting president. If he were a sitting president, they would have surrounded this entire golf course. But because he's not a sitting president, the security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible. So the next time he comes to the golf course, there will probably be a few more people around. But the Secret Service did exactly what they were supposed to do. They did exactly what they were supposed to do to protect. And their agents did a great job.
Secret Service agents opened fire; it's unclear whether the gunman returned fire. Bradshaw said the gunman fled the scene, but witnesses photographed his car, allowing police in a neighboring county to track him down.
The suspect is in custody and former President Trump is unharmed.
