Like many other progressives, Bill Gates supports digital identity As a means of cracking down on “misinformation” on the Internet.
Peter Gietl, editor in chief of BlazeNews' Return and Frontier Magazine, joins Jill Savage on the BlazeNews Tonight panel to discuss what digital identity will look like for ordinary Americans.
“There's no need to imagine anything,” says Guetl.
“You see it every day now in China. They have a digital identity to do anything online – banking, commerce, work, everything is tied to a single online identity that's issued to you by the government. If the government decides you've said something wrong or wants to revoke that digital identity, there's nothing you can do,” he explains.
“Don't we already have sort of digital identities?” asks Matthew Peterson, editor-in-chief of Blaze Media. “Not officially, but we could all be tracked, traced and possibly punished if any powerful entity so wished.”

“Yes, it certainly exists,” Gietl said. “Credit card companies have been building this digital identity structure behind the scenes.”
But Gates wants a single ID that would streamline that process and give the government ultimate authority over Americans' online activity.
Jill says the first real attempt to push for digital ID came during COVID. Thankfully, it didn't go through.
Gietl reminded the panel that one of the strong advocates for the adoption of digital ID during the pandemic was Bill Gates.
Gates is also working to test digital ideas in Africa.
“They're rolling this out in Africa as a digital ID pass, and unfortunately a lot of the really scary stuff is being tested in Africa because they know the media doesn't really report on these things. And it's a great way to see how it works in society,” Gietle said, noting that “Gates was behind it at Mastercard.”
Peterson wonders how people would react if such extreme regulatory measures were implemented in the United States.
“Are people just going to accept this as it is?” he asks.
