Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, who was arrested Sunday after being seen with a rifle in bushes on the edge of former President Donald Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, is reported to have traveled to Ukraine after the Russian invasion and was recruiting Afghan fighters to help with assassinations.

“They said, 'You're 56, you're old, you have no experience,'” Rouse said. Financial Times In an interview in 2023. “So, why not try recruiting and coordinating?”

But Routh didn't mind, instead choosing to go on to do “volunteer coordination” in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

“We want to promote foreign fighters and foreigners who are sacrificing their time, energy and lives to help Ukraine,” Routh told the outlet.

Additionally, Routh attempted to recruit Afghan fighters to fight for Ukraine.

“We have 20,000 Afghan soldiers sitting around doing nothing,” Routh said, suggesting that they could be persuaded to join the fight, but reports said no one took the plan seriously.

The move coincides with resurfaced social media posts highlighting Rouse's obsession with Ukraine, and also reports that he has donated 19 times to Democrats and has a Biden-Harris sticker on his truck.

Authorities arrested Routh on Sunday, but later reported that he is in fact a felon who is prohibited from possessing firearms. He now faces two charges, “possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number,” according to the report.

Breitbart News elaborates:

The felony charges stem from an incident in 2002 when Routh allegedly barricaded himself inside a home and engaged in a standoff with police. The Greensboro News & Record reports that after the standoff, Routh was arrested and “charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon of mass destruction, which refers to a fully automatic machine gun.”

Breitbart News reported that Routh fled the scene on Sunday after being spotted by Secret Service agents pointing a rifle over a fence at Trump's Palm Beach golf course. Police found an AK-style rifle, two backpacks and a Go-Pro camera in the bushes where Routh was reportedly camped before fleeing.

According to an FBI criminal affidavit, the suspect was carrying an SKS-style rifle.

Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder is among those questioning how Routh knew about Trump's schedule.

“I would ask that question. If I were the federal government, the first thing I'd want to know is, what was the point of having this guy be with Trump on the golf course without first informing the public that he was going to be there,” he said, describing the situation as “very puzzling.”

Appearing on Truth Social on Monday, the day after escaping a second death threat, Trump directly called out the left's rhetoric.

The rhetoric and lies exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC debate, and especially all of the ridiculous lawsuits designed to damage Joe and Kamala’s political opponent, ME, have taken our nation’s politics to a whole new level of hate, abuse and distrust.

He added: “This Communist Left rhetoric is only going to make things worse as bullets fly!”
