MSNBC columnist Frank Figliuzzi responded to the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump by calling for doubling the “size and budget” of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Figliuzzi attention The September 15, 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump was the second in two months, and the report noted that “the internal report into the Secret Service's mismanagement that led to a young sniper firing eight shots at President Trump on July 13 was scathing.”
He described the Secret Service's “mission” as difficult and criticized open carry, writing, “The mission of protecting the lives of those we serve in an outdoor environment in a country with 20 million assault rifles, including 31 states that allow citizens to walk around with their guns displayed, defies logic. Something must change.”
There are a few modifications that will be made here:
- Open carry is legal in 46 states, not 31.
- There are more than 28 million AR- and AK-style rifles in circulation, far more than the 20 million in circulation.
After writing about the second assassination attempt and the Secret Service's difficult task, Figliuzzi proposed several solutions, chief of which was to increase the size of the ATF.
He writes: “…[D]It would double the size and budget of the federal agency responsible for enforcing existing gun laws.”
The ATF has issued a flurry of gun control regulations over the past six years, many of which have been blocked, invalidated, or struck down by the courts, one example being when the Supreme Court struck down the ATF’s bump stock ban on June 14, 2024.
