Trump Blaming Dems for Assassination Attempts Is the Definition of ‘Gaslighting’

MSNBC host Joy Reid said on “The Leadout” Tuesday that former President Donald Trump's comments that President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats caused two assassination attempts were a classic example of “gaslighting.”

“We begin tonight with a visit to the underbelly of the nation, because the underbelly of the nation is the only place where Donald Trump can get away with pinning the blame for the violent state of our politics on Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party,” Reed said.

She added: “If you're looking for new examples to help Merriam-Webster define the term gaslighting, look no further than Trump's claim that the recent assassination attempt against him was a direct result of so-called 'highly inflammatory language from the other side.' And he follows that claim by continuing to use the same inflammatory language against them, saying: 'These are the people who are trying to destroy our country. They're called the enemy from within. They are the real threat.' It's as if Trump thinks we've all suffered collective amnesia from having used that rhetoric his whole life against anyone who misunderstands him.”
