Florida suspect’s plan goes up in smoke when SUV becomes engulfed in flames

A Florida criminal suspect's plan to escape authorities has literally gone up in smoke.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Derrick Rouse, 39, was arrested Friday after a car chase that authorities say began when two deputies were called to a domestic dispute over a gold Chevrolet Trailblazer at a gas station in Murphy.

An officer found the SUV behind the gas station.

According to the sheriff's office, the driver, Ruth, “appeared to have believed the stop sign was optional” and attempted to flee the scene.

Authorities said officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Ruth did not comply.

Police said Ruth engaged in “questionable driving behavior” during the pursuit, after which his vehicle burst into flames. Video footage from a deputy's dashcam showed smoke coming from the getaway SUV.

“Once the vehicle was engulfed in flames, Rouse decided to give up and turn himself in to deputies,” the sheriff's office said.

Rouse is seen exiting the burning vehicle and lying on the ground.

“Lesson of the day: Stop means stop. Oh, and don't run from police,” the sheriff's office said. “It's never a good idea.”

Ruth is being held in the Marion County Jail. He is charged with operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and resisting an officer while fleeing.
