Jamian Sherwood will likely start at inside linebacker again this week as C.J. Mosley recovers from a toe injury he suffered two weeks ago.
Sherwood started last week against the Patriots and Mosley sat out, but Mosley is once again questionable for this week's game against the Broncos.
Sherwood, who is in his fourth season with the Jets, has played well in Mosley's absence and is a good growth story for the team.
“He did a great job, he really did,” defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said. “Jamien, too, as everyone around him knows, his day-to-day approach is unparalleled in terms of how passionate he is about this. He was a player who had been converted to safety in 1996, and was not very familiar with the linebacker position.
“Everything was new to him, but it got to the point where the game was really starting to slow down for him. It's really great to see. He's had the opportunity to be in front of the group and be the signal caller. He's embraced it and he's doing a great job.”
The Jets selected Sherwood in the fifth round of the 2021 draft. As Ulbrich mentioned, Sherwood was a safety at Auburn. The Jets decided to convert him to linebacker.
Sherwood struggled early in his rookie season when Mosley was injured, and then his rookie season ended prematurely with a torn Achilles tendon. Since then, Sherwood has flourished as a role player, primarily playing on special teams and when the defense is down to three linebackers.
Sherwood is good at pass coverage because of his experience at safety.
“I think the guys that were back there, in that much space, in that wide space, that's definitely going to help him, especially for a team like us that runs a wide zone,” Ulbrich said. . “Guys who aren't used to that space can get lost in that and can be a liability, especially in the passing game. So being on the back end, playing in coverage, especially in the zone, and in our zone. For players who are familiar with it, it is definitely useful. ”
Special teams ace Irv Charles was fined $5,083 for unnecessary disorderly conduct in Week 3 against the Patriots.
Sherwood was also fined $6,354 for unnecessary roughness.
LB Marcelino McCrayball and DL Bruce Hector were promoted from the practice squad for Sunday's game.
