Biden-Harris Have Been Strong on ‘Keeping’ Tariffs, Trump’s Would Be a Tax

On Monday's broadcast of MSNBC's “Read Out,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said the Biden-Harris administration is “very strong on 'China steel dumping' and maintaining those tariffs.” But 2024 Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs “represent this tax, rather than applying it to specific industries or specific countries on an as-needed basis.”

Klobuchar began. “Donald Trump's proposal is [amount] Imposing a $4,000 sales tax on every American household. ”

Host Joy Reid said, “That's what people are literally calling President Trump's tequila tax, because people don't fully understand the kind of huge tariffs that McKinley imposed.'' Because I don't think there is… You're talking about imported tequila, imported beer from Mexico, imported beer from Germany, and in the case of televisions, video games, all that tax, customs duty percentage. will be raised.”

After agreeing with Reid's point, Klobuchar added: Look at, for example, steel dumping from China and the Biden-Harris administration being very strong on this and keeping tariffs in place. There's a place for that. But he intends to make this tax equivalent to a global domestic tariff, rather than using it against specific industries or specific countries as needed. ”
