A big day from second-year running back Chase Brown helped the Cincinnati Bengals get their first win of the season.
Brown scored two touchdowns in a 34-24 win over the Panthers in Charlotte.
But Brown's joyful trot to the locker room was unpleasantly interrupted when a fan showed up to pour a drink on the running back.
In response to this incident, the NFL and players' union are calling for a reconsideration. NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy confirmed to ESPN that the league is investigating the incident.
Ted Karras, a Bengals offensive lineman and NFLPA representative for the Bengals, said additional information could be gleaned through a video review.
Michael Thomas, NFLPA player director, said the team will attempt to identify the person involved in the incident.
“We'll see if we can identify the person and then go from there,” Thomas told ESPN. “But that should never happen to a player.”
Brown threw his glove into the stands above the visiting team's tunnel and said he was excited to celebrate the win over Carolina with his teammates.
“I was walking in [and] I felt liquid or something, and then I looked back at the video and I was like, 'Damn, this really happened,'” Brown told reporters after the game.
Brown did not confront fans, but urged everyone not to do anything like this in the future.
“Please don't throw drinks on us,” Brown said. “I mean, no one wants that.”
Last Sunday's incident is not the first time the Panthers organization has been involved in a drink-throwing situation.
In January, team owner David Tepper was fined after a video surfaced of him throwing a drink at fans during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Bengals return home this week to face the Baltimore Ravens on October 6th.
