Illegal immigrant previously charged with raping 8-year-old girl arrested after erroneous release

An illegal Honduran immigrant accused of raping an 8-year-old girl in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was arrested in 2019 after being mistakenly released from local custody.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) New Orleans office announced Monday that 28-year-old Carlos Vasquez was captured and arrested at a Baton Rouge workshop on Wednesday.

ICE said Vazquez entered the United States illegally for an unspecified amount of time on vacation and was mistakenly released from local custody after being convicted of a sex crime in 2019. ICE added that Vazquez remains at large.

Two years later, on November 18, 2019, ICE announced that Vasquez was found guilty of amended sexual assault charges and sentenced to six months in prison with probation. On the same day, the court accepted his guilty plea to a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, fined him $500, paid court costs of $235, and placed him on one year of supervised probation.

However, on the same day, the Franklin Parish Detention Center mistakenly released him from custody without notifying ERO Baton Rouge.

Vazquez is currently in federal custody, according to ICE.
