Hurricane Milton threatens 235,000 commercial properties, Moody’s estimates

hurricane milton With just hours left until Florida hits, Moody's says more than $1 trillion in commercial real estate alone is in the path of the powerful storm.

“More than 235,000 commercial properties in the state have a greater than 50% chance of being exposed to wind speeds of at least 50 miles per hour (the wind speed at which some damage is likely to occur).” Moody's said in an update Tuesday on its website. “The total estimated value of these properties is $1.1 trillion.”

A hurricane, currently designated as a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to strike. hits the west coast of floridaincluding Tampa Bay, before crossing the state on Wednesday.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis told “Varnie & Friends” on Tuesday that the Milton construction could result in insured losses of $10 billion to $20 billion.

National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned in Wednesday morning's advisory. Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall late tonight, resulting in “widespread and destructive storm surge along portions of the west-central coast of the Florida peninsula, with maximum flooding of 10 feet or more.”

hurricaneAs of 5 a.m. ET, it was centered about 300 miles southwest of Tampa and had maximum sustained winds of 160 mph.

The NHC also announced that “precipitation amounts are expected to reach 6 to 12 inches across the central and northern Florida peninsula through Thursday, with localized rainfall totals up to 18 inches.” “This rainfall, along with moderate to major river flooding, poses a risk of catastrophic and life-threatening flash and urban flooding.”

NHC added, “We must urgently prepare to protect lives and property, including preparing for long-term power outages.”
