Watch as Coast Guard helicopter crew rescues man floating on cooler 30 miles off Florida’s coast

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew found and rescued a man clinging to a cooler in the Gulf of Mexico, about 30 miles off Florida's central coast.

The Coast Guard District 7, which covers South Carolina, Georgia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, and Florida, posted video of the miraculous rescue Thursday afternoon.

Video shows a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Miami approach a man clinging to a cooler as one of the crew members is lowered into the water.

The crew then swims to the man in distress, and the video ends.

The USCG Division of St. Petersburg said it had been in contact with the man on Wednesday, but lost contact around 6:45 p.m. as Category 3 Hurricane Milton hit western Florida.

The man was found Thursday about 30 miles off Longboat Key and was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment, the Coast Guard said.

Longboat Key is about 10 miles north of Siesta Key, where Milton made landfall Wednesday night with wind gusts of 190 mph.

As of Thursday night, about 3.2 million people in Florida remained without power.

Although Milton left a trail of destruction across the Sunshine State, it remains a Category 1 storm and has moved off the state's east coast.
