Detroit Free Press Marathon Runner, 57, Collapses and Dies on Course

A runner competing in the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon has died after collapsing on the course, race officials announced Sunday morning.

The runner, a 57-year-old man, crossed the mountain from Detroit, Michigan into Ontario, Canada, and descended the mountain about five miles into the race. detroit news reported.

He was rushed to Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette Campus, where he was pronounced dead, race official Aaron Verthoven told the magazine.

“Our condolences. We are saddened and our hearts go out to them. They truly do,” Verthoven said. “That's tough. It's tough for anyone to hear that call over the radio.”

“I would like to thank the medical staff, the volunteers along the course. They respond to these types of situations, medical emergencies,” he added.

The man's identity has not yet been released and his family is awaiting notification.

The marathon was later won by a husband-and-wife duo from Ferndale. detroit free press Reported:

Andy Bowman and Sydney DeVore took first place in the men's and women's races, respectively.
