Bob Casey refuses to concede PA Senate race as Schumer welcomes Republican McCormick among new senators

Democratic Sen. Bob Casey Jr. still refuses to concede the race against Republican Dave McCormick, despite the Associated Press and other media reporting the race in McCormick's favor. .

In a new video message, Casey, who is in his third term, said the democratic process would “unfold” once all votes are counted. As of early Tuesday afternoon, Mr. McCormick led Mr. Casey by 34,561 votes, according to Pennsylvania's election results website.

“My priority has always been to stand up for the people of Pennsylvania. Across the commonwealth, nearly 7 million people voted in free and fair elections. So we'll finish counting those votes,''' Casey said.

“America's democratic process was born in Pennsylvania, and that process will unfold. I want to thank election officials across the commonwealth for their hard work this weekend. Their work ensures Pennsylvanians' voices are heard. It will be.”

McCormick led by more than 30,000 votes when the Associated Press called the race Thursday at 4:09 p.m. At this point, an estimated 91,000 votes remained, but the Associated Press claimed there were not enough votes in Casey's areas to make up the difference.

McCormick's campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Mr. McCormick declared victory Friday in Pittsburgh, thanking Mr. Casey and his family for their decades of service to the Commonwealth.

McCormick said Casey and his namesake father, a pro-life moderate who served as governor in the 1980s and 1990s, deserve great respect for having “served with honor.” Casey when he was young He has served three terms since defeating conservative Sen. Rick Santorum in 2006.

“I want to start with a message of absolute gratitude. I'm grateful to stand on this beautiful day in a city that means so much to my family. My father attended college at Pitt; we… We spent our most formative years here. Three of our girls were born here,” McCormick said.

McCormick is scheduled to attend the new senators' orientation in the nation's capital this week. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York initially said McCormick would not be welcome at orientation because there were still votes to be counted, even though the Associated Press had already projected McCormick as the winner. . Schumer ultimately relented and said Tuesday morning that he was invited to join Republicans.
