Comedian and TV personality Bill Maher blamed Democrats' “aggressively anti-common sense policies” for losing the White House, both chambers of Congress and the Supreme Court.
“The reason I'm so angry with the Democratic Party is because the issues that are important to me as a voter are democracy and the environment, and now there's no one to advocate for or defend either of them. You blew it away with your aggressive anti-common sense policies and xenophobic attitude,” Maher said Friday night on his show “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
“You lost the House, the Senate, the White House, the Supreme Court, everything, leaving us completely defenseless and ready to be violated,” he added.
Maher's comments came as President-elect Trump is expected to return to the White House, with Republicans holding majorities in both the House and Senate, and a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court. Democrats have been on fire since their painful defeat after Election Day.
For some, the party's woes revolve around ineffective messaging on table economic issues, such as accelerating trends in inflation, wages and wealth inequality. For some, the problem lies in the explosive debate over the war between Israel and Hamas. Additionally, there are issues related to the culture wars, such as issues surrounding transgender rights.
Maher also attacked Democrats, suggesting they lack engagement with voters.
“The basis of the Democratic campaign is, 'We know all along that we're smart people, so we don't need to consider that,'” Maher said.
“Should I get the clothespins? Get off your nose and actually have a conversation with the other half of the country. Let's stop shouting at people to join our programs and instead create programs that are worth joining,” Maher said.
